The CEO's Guide to Effective Team Building

Team building can be a very effective strategy to improve team cohesion and boosting business performance, but it takes a long and careful planning result desired results. Here are a few simple guidelines that will enhance the success of the great team building.

1. Clarify your goals.

It is important that you have the reasons you want a team building to be clear. They want to generate solutions to pressing business issues? Are you trying to promote"Out of the box thinking" among the members of your team? Is there a conflict, require the solution? Be precise, what you want to achieve and articulate this clearly to become the person obtaining quotes from suppliers in your name.

When companies contact me for information, I always ask about the objectives. This is where much confusion. Too often asked the person with the meeting does not require the slightest idea has been. Once source of confusion has to dowith the word "team building" The concepts of "recovery team will" and "team building" is often abused and treated as if they are interchangeable. They're not.

TEAM SPORTS

Recovery team is to get your team involved in any activity or experience only for the fun of it. There are no specific business objectives or outcomes.

TEAM BUILDING

Team-building team is looking to increase the cohesion and performance in order to improve business results. Many team-buildingMeetings include recreation, relaxation, however, is a means to an end, not the end. Team building can be delivered locally off, site as the day session or in a hotel or resort with overnight stays, locally or at a foreign destination

The phases of effective team building:

Pre-conference communication to communicate objectives and expectations
Executive Briefing to identify the most important business problems, communicate, clarify your support, and, like team-building is relevant to theBusiness (1 hour)
Context of recruitment and team briefing by agents (1 1 / 2 - 2 hours)
Recreation (flexible & optional)
Simulation (3 to 8 hours)
Debriefing (1 hour)
Business application exercises (1 to 1 / 2 hours for prep., 5) up to 15 minutes per group for presentations
Business agenda (flexible)

2. Explain your decision-making criteria, process and timing.

Be prepared to make a decision 1 or 2 weeks after a bid. Delays may increase costs andProbability that the preferred locations, dates and airline space is available.

3. Match your time frame and your goals.

Because it is not enough time to distribute the desired objectives and one of the main reasons that team-building is not. Here is a guide to the measurement of time on your goals:

Half Day:

strictly for recreation

1 days:

Suitable for:

Recreation with business meeting
very simple simulation with debriefing, short business
Application and brief feedback from each group exercise

2 days:

) suitable for the simulation (or recreation, debriefing, and in-depth business analysis and short presentations by each group

2 1 / 2 to 3 days:

suitable for simulation, recreation, debriefing; in-depth business analysis, business meeting includes

3 1 / 2 to 4 days:

appropriate if you intend to involve customers and suppliersPresentations

4. Do not forget to pack the agenda and you do not build in the buffer.

Plan enough time for transport delays and for the people in the city to regulate, especially in winter, or when you leave the country. Remember when a night arrival and early start is efficient, but it is bound to create resentment and generate.

Make allowances for some time, although it does add a half a day. One of the worst things you can do is take your team to a beautifulSituation and give them no time to relax and enjoy.

5. Start planning well in advance and before your last day to lock.

Ideally, you should contact suppliers for at least 8 to 12 weeks prior to the session for something local. (For trips abroad, is 3 to 6 months at best, especially when the target is very popular.) Leave about a week for quotes. Make sure that your data is not written in stone until it is determined a way to availability, wereappropriate locations.

6. Brief your assistant in its entirety.

Make sure that the person to whom you will delegate the task of quotes from suppliers clear:

preferred dates - it's always good to have 2 or 3 options
Group size, composition and the degree of physical fitness
Other agenda items will be added
Its aims (see point 1)
Deadline (3 days, 2 days, 1 day, 1 / 2 days)
Budget

7. Delegate fact-finding but never a decision.

Since theDecision-makers, you should always talk to the senior facilitator or organizer of the firm with whom you think to do business. This will ensure that all necessary information has been submitted and made available. Unless your session is strictly recreational, decision-making by committee should be avoided. A committee should be given to exploring options and input, but an executive branch should always make the final decision on what is best for largeBusiness.

8. You do not get into a rut. Try something new.

For example, you use the team building session, you give your team a new perspective. This will be an "out of the box" thinking and help them generate ideas, to ensure that your company remains competitive in the global market. To find the budget to have maybe 1 retreat this year instead of 2 or make an off-site every two years instead of annually. Take your crew on a desert safari in Dubai, in Oman or roping horseRiding in Jamaica to join an experienced facilitator, your experience with your daily business challenges.

9. Set the tone with pre-communication.

Use an e-mail or carefully crafted message left in your intranet to communicate goals, expectations and rules of conduct. For example, if your group into the habit of a drunken down to rethink your approach on the basis of:

recent court decisions on the company's liability for accidentsby intoxicated employees
how this behavior seems to Shareholders
the impact on the reputation of your company, if the press got wind of it

10. Ensure the full participation of the entire team for the duration of the session.

This can be a challenge, but it can be done. It is difficult to results when players dive into and out of the session to achieve. Have each participant and assign a full disclosure may be about some of the situations likely to arise. They should let you know key customers and suppliers, as long as they are outside the office when they return, and contact during their absence.

11. Keep your briefing shortly.

People have to have a limited lifespan, especially if it has a long journey in order to have an off-site. A half-hour presentation followed by a half-hour for questions is more than enough to get things kick-off. Going overtime, pressure on the rest of the agenda and the frustration of theMembers of your team. You can always build more air time on the agenda during the business portion of your conference or retreat, when all the team building is finished.

12. Dates for regular checkpoints with the organizer or the retailer involved and him or her in any course corrections.

Discuss how things are, and come together with solutions, if there are any concerns.

13. Do not cut in the simulation, or a short debriefing.

Remember, analyticalLearners do not "get it" just based on experience. They need time to think and process information. If you panic and cut it short, they will never have the opportunity to benefit from the session.

14. Follow up, follow up, follow-up!

The use of new tools by introducing team building on a continuous basis. Give each group a project and get updates at regular intervals in the months after your team-building session.
